Later that night, with the moon risen and shining brightly through the blinds, Derrick lay awake in bed. He couldn’t quiet his thoughts enough to sleep, and the longer he was awake the more his sense of unease grew.

What we did together… He frowned up at the guest bedroom’s ceiling and gingerly touched the renewed mate-mark at the hollow of his throat. Maybe if he hadn’t enjoyed it so much it wouldn’t be so bad, or maybe if he could convince himself that Jack had tricked him into it, but the bear shifter had so clearly given him a chance to back out.

Derrick kept coming back to one question: why did I do it?

He’d wanted to. He couldn’t deny it. Something about Jack just made him want to give in, and it wasn’t just his mate-scent: the man made him behave in ways that no alpha should. If he couldn’t be strong and in command with his own mate, how could he be a good leader for a pack? A real alpha was naturally in control, in addition to being an intelligent and fair leader. Derrick had believed he was like that, but Jack had had the advantage over him since their first meeting.

This was a mistake, he realized. Seeking out his mate, trying to found his own pack—he was obviously not cut out for any of this. He thought about carrying on down this path and made his decision.

He had to leave.

The thought of walking away from the man who was meant to be his lifelong companion made him feel sick, but Derrick could see no other option. It would be better to live as a lone wolf than to live with the constant reminder of the future denied to him by his own strange luck and his failure as an alpha. Part of him wanted nothing more to stay with Jack, but if the man could make him heel and roll over so easily, what did that make Derrick?

If he wanted to be true to himself as a wolf and an alpha—well, maybe he’d find happiness a different way. He’d run until he found somewhere else, where he could try again.

Derrick gathered his things and silently made his way downstairs and out to the yard. In a moment there was a wolf where the man had been, gripping a bag in its teeth and bounding away, over the fence and into the night forest.

If he was lucky, he’d soon forget the scent of his mate, and everything else he was leaving behind.
